There are three Salmonberry leaves on a stem, as seen on the picture on the right. In the fall they turn colour, as the plant absorbs nutrients out of the trees to save over the winter. These nutrients are needed to maintain the chlorophyll that is key to photosynthesis and the leaves' green colour. Without the nutrients, the chlorophyll breaks down, changing the leaf's colour.
