Mushroom & Moss

This little mushroom was growing on a fallen branch about the size of an arm. It was maybe 5cm (2 inches) high. Moss isn't often seen quite this closely, if you look around the full-sized image below you'll see dew drops and tiny insects. You'll also see artifacts from the focus-stacking process. This picture was made from 30 images each made after a small bump in the focus. The result shows more objects in focus than would be possible with a single exposure.

We did try to identify this mushroom but we are not experts in them and we couldn't choose which one of four different species we had as candidates. If you can identify it from this picture, plese send us an email. If it helps, it was growing out of a tree branch that had been on the forest floor for some time. The wood is quite soft and moist. It was growing out of a slight depression.

Photography notes:

We have used focus-stacking before, but now we have cameras that automate the process. For this picture, the camera was just a hands-width above the ground. The out-of-focus background is a mound on the forest floor covered with moss and twigs.
