Hairy Woodpecker

Photograph

This very active bird was photographed in Elk Island National Park, just east of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. We would have liked to move in closer to have made the bird larger in the picture, but he just wouldn't let us approach any closer. The image is a good background image despite the small size of the bird because of the softness of the out-of-focus trees.

This photograph was made onto Kodak Gold 100 35mm film using a 300mm lens at f4. The camera (a Nikon F5) automatically set the shutter speed, which was not recorded. The negative was scanned at 10,000 samples per square millimetre.
