Western Red Cedar Stump

Vancouver and its surrounding area once contained a climax temperate rain forest. There are still many huge stumps left over in areas that were largely left alone after the logging stopped, like large public parks. This stump is in Tynehead Park. It is about 3m tall and about the same in diamater. Red cedar wood resists decay better than most other woods, so this stump is still impressive. However like most of the ones left behind, it is deteriorating and in a few more decades will be gone. Unfortunately the people who fell those trees left only a few in the area. There are still old growth forests, but they're further away. We're concerned that there are fewer and quieter voices for their preservation.

Photography notes:

The picture was converted to black & white in postprocessing. The effect is as if a light yellow filter was used on a monochromatic camera.
