Broadleaf Stonecrop

Sedum spathulifolium

This picture was made in East Sooke Park on Vancouver Island, close to the southernmost point of western Canada. These plants were growing on a rocky spit jutting into Bechy Bay near its entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. In wet weather the leaves are a rich green and thick. When the weather is dry, like when this picture was made, the leaves become waxy to hold on to the water previously soaked up. The plants pictured were growing mostly on rock with very little soil in a partly shaded area. It formed a mat bordered on one side by vertical rock and the other where the shade changed to open sun.

Photography notes:

The computer background image is squeezed vertically a little bit to fit all of the flowers into the picture.
