Ocean Spray

Holodiscus discolor

The Ocean Spray is native to our area and much of west N. America, particularly near the coast. It flowers around the change between June and July but they only last for a couple of weeks. When it is flowering, the scent is unmistakable. The shrub can grow to around 4m in height. The picture below was taken at eye level.

The flower stalks are generally near the end of branches. The flowers themselves are tiny, only 5 or 6mm in diameter. When the flowers fade, the stalks also dry up but they don't fall off easy and can "hang around" for a long time.

Photography notes:

The two lowest vertical pictures are both crops from horizontal original images.
