We can across this pinecone while walking our dog. We thought it unusual for mushrooms to be growing out of it, but we've seen this happen several times since. We returned the next day with a camera in hand to photograph it -- and give the dog another walk. Note the mushroom at the far right, growing out of the moss. is a different species.
Photography notes:
This scene was higher than eye level, so it was a little bit of a challenge to photograph. The camera was held overhead (should have brought a tripod) with the back screen tilted down to compose the picture. A very small aperture was needed for acceptable depth of field resulting in a long exposure given the uncomfortable position of the camera. It took several shots to get a aharp picture.
