With the sun very low in the winter sky, a small group of tree is spotlit briefly. So after this picture was made the sun passed behind the ridge in the background putting the entire west side of the lake in shadow. In the larger images made for computer backgrounds (and in any print from this image) you can see there is something wrong with these trees. The lake is a reservoir for electric power and during recent upgrades to the generators and turbines the lake flooded for over a year, killing trees close to the water's edge.
