While Sandhill Cranes are usually visiting our area only on their migration, there is a small population that stays year-round. This bird is one of those that stay, it has become habituated with people and approaches them for food. The story we've heard is that about 20 years ago a Sandhill Crane chick was orphaned. Staff at the Reiffel Bird Sanctuary adopted the chick and raised it and eventually it mated with a wild bird. Slowly a resident population developed which are used to people.
