In this image, we are looking west from the abandoned forest road that runs along the Callaghan Valley. The peaks beyond the forest may be hosting some of the Olympic games in 2010. The dead and falling trees show a bog lies below. Let's take a closer look at this area.
The moss and horsetails quite close
to the edge of the road confirm the underlying soil is damp. We
see that there are a whole variety of different plants, but that
there are a few more prominent stalks among them.
We think these stalks are of the
Green-Flowered Bog Orchid. You can see the plant's little flowers
surround the stalk by the hundreds.
The Northern Rice Root also likes
the moist soil of this area. The name comes from the little bulbs
along its roots. These bulbs were harvested by the aboriginal
peoples many years ago. Apparent while they are edible, they are
bitter and required a long boil before consumption.
The Rosy Twisted Stalk is another
plant that likes a very moist environment. Note how the plant's
stem forms an angle where each leaf is attached.
