Male Wood Duck

Here's North America's most colourful native duck - well one representative of them. We were able to spot this normally shy duck during one of our numerous visits to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary. Through most of North America these are migratory ducks, but they seem to like it near Vancouver and stay here year-round. Although they prefer to nest in hollows in trees, they have adapted to "bird condos" - nest boxes.

We used a 80-400mm at about 300mm handheld at 1/125s, f8 onto Fuji Velvia film. The lens has an electronic "vibration reduction" mechanism to overcome camera shake in such a long exposure.
