Male American Widgeon

Mareca americana

We have widgeons in our area all year, although there seem to be more over winter than in the summer. These ducks don't quack, instead they have a distintive wheeze. The male has a prominent white patch on its forehead, the female's have a pattern fairly typical of female ducks. Here is a picture of a female widgeon.
